Wine-Making

Winemaking is part science, part art, part luck, and part determination. In California, it has always been marked by an independence of spirit and a willingness to learn from what has come before. The result is reflected in each bottle of wine that comes out of the billiant Napa and Sonoma Valley countryside.

Different varieties of grape clones are used throughout the Wine Country, alomost all of which are based on varietals that originated in Europe.

Zinfandel is the only grape type thought to be purely American, though no one is yet one hundred percent certain of its origins.

Starting at the begining of the twentieth century, European vinteners began grafting their vines to American rootstocks, which are not susceptible to Phylloxera, a type of aphid that quickly destroys vines from the ground up. Today, most vines are still grafted in this way, making the majority of plants Phylloxera-resistant.
