Simple Bee Hoon Soup
Today I asked him,”Do you have money?” I asked him,”How to survive when all money is going to use up already?” He shrugged. He said,”Don’t know.”
I am grateful to my mother. They have been giving me food. Otherwise, my money will not be able to sustain the family until now. But now, with the baby coming soon, and I am pregnant, and the market had ‘crashed’, we had no more money left soon. A few weeks ago, I talked to a friend. He was better off, much better off than me. I would not want to borrow money from my parents or my siblings. But he is my friend, and I thought I can borrow some money from him, but guess what, he told me he also got no money….
I had never borrowed any money from friends before, nor ASK for a loan. This is my first time. And I understand how Singaporean or people in general. When it comes to money matters, people will shun from you, especially they know that you have no money — even family members.
With no income, and when you are hungry, you have to eat whatever you have. You cannot be fussy. Beggars have no choice. And yet, someone is very hard to please. No money, and yet ….
I can only depend on myself and pray.
This is Bee Hoon Soup with Fish Cake, Cabbage and Braised Peanuts, served as Lunch.
There are not much food left in the fridge. Cabbage is the most durable vegetables. With whatever ingredients I can find in the fridge, I just cooked something for the family.
In the past, I would not cook Bee Hoon for everybody because the ‘big baby’ do not eat Bee Hoon. Just a few days ago, I asked them (daughter and ‘big baby’) to buy some groceries. I gave them the list, but always end up with ‘mistakes’ back. The big baby does not even know the difference between Bee Hoon (Mee Feng) and Mian Xian (Mee Sua). I asked them to buy Mee Sua (Mian Xian) and they end up buying Bee Hoon. The reason I do not want to buy Bee Hoon is also because of the ‘Big Baby’. The ‘Big Baby’ does not like to eat Bee Hoon. The rest of the family — the children and me likes Bee Hoon.
Anyway, I learned not to ‘accommodate’ everybody already — cannot afford to. He always gave people the attitude: You either take it or leave it. I have to apply it to him now. He is too good life, and yet always so picky about food, and wasting lots of things.
So on this day, I cooked Bee Hoon for the whole family. If he does not want to eat, too bad. I have all reasons to back me up. “Who ask you to buy the wrong thing? And you are the only one who don’t eat Bee Hoon!”
Anyway, I like simple food. But with me pregnant now, my taste is all different. With simple food, I might have to eat more often as I get hungry very easily. But anyway, this Bee Hoon is very nice, though it looks very plain.
With all the food that I can eat, I give thanks to the Lord.
