Wisdom

By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest. ~ Confucius

The intellect delights in investigating the past and the future but does not look to the present. Environment, time, and objects are all in oneself. How can they exist independently of me? They may change, but “I” remain unchanging. ~ Sri Ramana Maharshi

Knowledge and Learning
As is the food, so is the Mind,
as is the mind, so are the Thoughts,
as are the thoughts, so is the Conduct,
as is the conduct, so is the Health ~ Sathya Sai Baba

A powerful interest which dominates a man’s life polarizes his mind, which then acts like a magnet and continually draws out from his stored-up experience and also from new experiences whatever is relevant and useful to the end in view. Deep interest invigorates the mind, awakens its dormant powers and is the key to super excellence, invention and discovery. ~ Swami Krishnananda

To know that you do not know is the best.
To pretend to know when you do not know is a disease.
Only when one recognizes this disease as a disease
can one be free from the disease. ~ Lao Tzu

A man must elevate himself by his own mind, not degrade himself. The mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his potential enemy as well. ~ Bhagvad Gita

Knowledge manifested, wisdom grows.
Wisdom manifested, spiritually soars. ~ Sri Chinmoy

Thinking
Study without thinking and you are blind; think without studying and you are in danger. ~ Confucius

True thoughts have duration in themselves.
If the thoughts endure, the seed is enduring;
if the seed endures, the energy endures;
if the energy endures, then will the spirit endure.
The spirit is thought; thought is the heart;
the heart is the fire; the fire is the Elixir. ~ Lu Yen

Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what holds you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom. ~ Buddha

It is not so much what you believe in matters, it is more the way in which you believe it and proceed to translate that belief into action. ~ Lin Yutang

Words have the power to destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world. ~ Budhha

Spirituality is like a medicine. To heal the illness, it is not sufficient to look at the medicine and talk about it. You have to ingest it. ~ Dalai Lama

There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. ~ Dalai Lama

It is felt that a disciplined mind leads to happiness and an undisciplined mind leads to suffering, and in fact it is said that bringing about discipline within one’s mind is the essence of the Buddha’s teaching. ~ Dalai Lama

Training of the mind helps one to bear sorrows and bereavements with courage, and finally these do not affect such one. ~ Sri Ramana Maharshi

My experience is that everything is bliss. But the desire for bliss creates pain. Thus bliss becomes the seed of pain. The entire universe of pain is born of desire. Give up the desire for pleasure and you will not even know what is pain. ~ Nisargadatta Maharaj

When one is in the highest transcendental samadhi, the physical personality of others disappears. We do not see others as human beings. We see only a flow of consciousness, like a river that is entering into the ocean. ~ Sri Chinmoy

Love is the highest bliss that man can attain to, for through it alone he truly knows that he is more than himself, and that he is at one with the All. ~ Rabindranath Tagore
